What are Macerator Pumps?
Posted on: 13/03/2023
A macerator pump is a kind of pump that is connected to a toilet (or in some cases included in the toilet itself if you buy a macerator toilet) that grinds up solid waste so that it can be pumped against gravity more effectively. This kind of system isn’t used particularly often in the UK, but it can provide an efficient solution to a certain issue that may arise when installing a new toilet.
They are used in the home for bathroom installations in basements or that are a distance from the existing plumbing system. The flushed toilet sends waste to a unit behind the toilet, high-powered blades liquefy solid waste before it is pumped out of the unit through a pipe that is directly tied to the main sewer.
Macerating toilets can be more expensive than standard toilets, but much less expensive than having to create and install an entirely new plumbing system to have an additional toilet in your home.
What are the advantages?
Macerating toilets work well in basements or parts of the house that aren’t close to the main soil pipe, or other unique situations where a toilet would be a beneficial addition to a space but running a 110mm waste is not practical.
In terms of durability, the lifespan of a macerator pump depends on how much it is used and the brand you purchase Saniflo is the market leader in these products. More recent macerator pumps can last up to 15 years when used correctly. Macerator pumps installed in commercial properties, however, may need replacing more often and it is recommended to install a commercial pumping station.
Our recommendation.
Our go-to recommendation for macerator pumps is the Saniflo Sanisuite. Small but mighty, the Sanisuite macerator is the perfect solution for niche toilet installations. Quick and easy to install, the pump can pump waste up to 3m vertically and 30m horizontally all with minimum noise due to utilising a small-bore macerator.
